2022 FIFA World Cup: Ghana among only 2 African sides to score against Uruguay at the World Cup
Ghana’s Black Stars are one of the only 2 African countries that have scored goals against Uruguay at the World Cup, a Ghana Sports Online research has confirmed.
The South Americans have played 4 times against African sides at the Mundial with the four-time African champions being one of the four oppositions.
Diego Alonso’s side has scored 8 goals and conceded 4 against African opponents at the World Cup.
Sulley Muntari’s first-half stoppage-time long-range strike at the Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg was only the 4th goal La Celeste had conceded against African sides at the World Cup.
During the 2002 World Cup which was co-hosted between South Korea and Japan, Senegal drew 3-3 with the Uruguayans at the Suwon World Cup Stadium in Suwon.
Attacker Khalilou Fadiga became the first African player to score against the two-time World Champions when he netted on the 20th-minute mark through the penalty spot.
Defensive midfielder Bouba Diop completed a first-half triumph for the Teranga Lions. However, Richard Morales, Diego Forlan, and Alvaro Recoba scored three times in the second-half to level the scoring. Uruguay were eliminated from the competition.
The other FIFA World Cup editions Uruguay have played against African countries include the 2010 edition (South Africa 0-3 Uruguay), (Uruguay -pen- 1-1 Ghana), and 2018 (Egypt 0-1 Uruguay).
