2022 FIFA World Cup: ‘You wasted Kudus’ – Former Rangers coach fires Otto Addo

Former Rangers manager Ally McCoist has sharply criticised Ghana coach Otto Addo for deploying Mohammed Kudus in midfield against Portugal.

The former Scotland international believes the Ajax star’s potential was limited by the decision to play him in midfield.

He was obviously Ghana’s best performer in the game as he attempted 2 shots with 1 on target and provided Andre Ayew with the assist to level the scoring for Ghana.

He touched the ball 41 times. He also completed 4 dribbles – the highest by any player on the Stadium 974 field. He offered 3 crosses into enemy territory and made 1 tackle.

And after his assist, McCoist suggested that he cannot understand why he is being used as a midfielder.

“Nothing worse than somebody saying I told you so,” he told ITV. “However, he’s just a different player further up the pitch. He really is. He’s wasted in midfield. He’s got so much to offer in forward areas. Great cut-back, low and hard.”

Certainly, he has spent the majority of this season playing as a striker for Ajax. And that has seen Kudus score 10 goals in 21 games for the Dutch giants. Of course, one of those strikes came from a brilliant finish at Liverpool in the Champions League.

Kudus is clearly a huge talent wherever he plays. But perhaps Liverpool will take note of the impact he made further up the pitch should they one day bring him to Anfield.
