Free SHS policy not under review – Education Ministry

The Ministry of Education has explained that the Free Senior High School policy is not under review.

A statement issued by the Ministry on July 25 noted that the policy, since its inception, has increased enrollment of students from a little over 800,000 to approximately 1.3 million individuals in 2022.

It added that the country has achieved a gender parity index of 0.99 in 2021 as compared to 0.92 in 2017 due to the Free SHS policy.

For the purposes of these achievements and other successes chalked by the policy, the Ministry “wishes to assure Ghanaians that the policy is not under review and remains committed to its continuous implementation.”

On Thursday, July 21, Prof. Opoku-Amankwa in an answer to a question posed by Raymond Acquah on JoyNews‘ Upfront said the GES is reviewing the policy to determine how much parents can pay.

However, the Education Ministry has stated “unequivocally that the Free SHS policy is not under review.”

According to the Ministry, “progress made thus far points to the fact that the Free SHS policy is serving the nation well.”
