Govt to engage IPPs next week over unpaid arrears
The government and the Independent Power Producers (IPPs) are set to have a meeting regarding the outstanding debts owed to the producers.
This meeting comes in response to a letter from the IPPs to the government, in which they threatened to suspend power supply starting from July 1, 2023, if an interim payment of 30% of the debts is not made.
The IPPs have expressed their inability to continue powering the national grid beyond June 30 if they do not receive payment.
To prevent a potential shutdown that could disrupt the power supply to the national grid, a meeting with the Minister of Finance has been scheduled for next week.
The objective of the meeting is to establish a payment plan that will address the issue and avoid any power supply interruptions.
Chief Executive Officer of the Independent Power Producers, Distributors and Bulk Consumers Elikplim Kwabla Apetorgbor has been lamenting the delay in the payment.
“We expect that, within the respective credit days, we are to get the money for the services provided to them. But that hasn’t been the case. We do not receive anything from the CashWaterFall system again. We do not know what is happening, but the Ministry of Finance has taken responsibility to the energy sector payments, so we are channeling our communication there.”

He further expressed frustration over the delay in payment.
The IPPs are eager for a resolution to ensure the sustainability of power supply and mitigate any potential negative consequences caused by a shutdown.
