Accra’s Trailblazing La Même Gang Return with Bold New Album “True Colors”

As Afropop continues to soar on the global stage, its roots in the alternative “alté” culture of West Africa cannot be overlooked. Emerging in cities like Lagos and Accra toward the end of the 2010s, alté culture fostered a vibrant, genre-bending musical movement that reshaped contemporary African music. Leading the charge in Accra, the music collective La Même Gang unlocked a new realm of expression, making waves across Ghana and West Africa with their unique blend of trap, hiplife, EDM, and more. Known for their creative synergy, La Même Gang captured fans’ attention with their debut album La Même Tape in 2017 and its follow-up, La Même Tape: Linksters, solidifying their place as one of the most innovative groups in West Africa.

After a period of individual projects and sporadic releases, fans were thrilled when La Même Gang surprised the music scene with their 2023 EP, Let’s Start a Riot, a four-track project that reminded listeners of the collective’s choppy flows and nimble melodies. Now, La Même Gang has taken things to the next level with their third album, True Colors—a triumphant return to the heart of alté culture.

True Colors builds on La Même Gang’s trap fusion sound, enriching it with elements of Afrobeats, soul, and hip-hop. The album explores themes of friendship, love, and resilience, marking a new chapter for the collective. On Gang Riddim, a standout track, they celebrate brotherhood and the power of unity. The drill-infused C’est La Vie showcases their defiant energy, rebuking time-wasters with the confident swagger they honed during their rise in the late 2010s.

One of the album’s highlights is Odo Ni Sika, a collaboration with Ghanaian superstar King Promise. The mellow, Afrobeats-tinged track is a tender tribute to love, demonstrating La Même Gang’s versatility in navigating diverse themes. The soulful Wash My Pain Away delves into deeper, introspective territory, showcasing a level of vulnerability rarely seen in the Afropop space.

True Colors is more than an album; it’s a testament to La Même Gang’s impact on Ghana’s music scene and their role in shaping alté culture’s influence on Afropop’s mainstream. With their experimental sound and storytelling, La Même Gang continues to push boundaries, capturing the essence of West African creativity and the evolution of Afropop. True Colors cements their place at the forefront of Ghana’s alté movement, a collective that remains unafraid to innovate and inspire.
