Delay in MMDCEs’ nomination hasn’t slowed development – Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has dispelled claims that there is currently a vacuum in the administration of local government structures.

According to him, the delay in nominating Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) has not hampered development in the country.

He was responding to criticism from a section of the public, including the Minority in Parliament, who are unhappy with the government’s decision to allow MMDCEs to stay on the job in acting capacities.

The MP for South Day Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor is even in court challenging the situation.

But Akufo-Addo said the “impression is false. All the people who were MMDCEs in my first term are still at post.”

“There is no vacuum in local government in Ghana as we speak today,” he said on Sunday.

He made this revelation during his two-day tour of the Western North Region.

He said no law has been broken despite the delay as it falls within the President’s mandate to do so.

Addressing the issue for the first time, the President said he is cautious in selecting his appointees.

“We have set up committees at regional and national levels to make recommendations for me. I have to make sure that they fit into the political purposes of the government and respond to issues of competence and political suitability.”

He, however, revealed that the officials to occupy the position will be announced later this month.

“This month of September, all these matters would be resolved,” he added.

Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo has named his first District Chief Executive since his re-election.

During his two-day tour, the President confirmed Yawson Amoah as the new District Chief Executive (DCE) of the Akontombra District.
