Third World Network Africa, a research and advocacy organization is urging African leaders to re-look their respective energy transitions plans to make it more tactful to address the economic needs of the continent.
The advocacy group maintains that although the continent is working towards a shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy, the current energy policies of Africa do not give full returns for the development of the continent.
Dr. Yao Graham is the Executive Director at the Third World Network Africa and he has been speaking to Citi Business News
“Many African countries have not drawn up a proper energy transition plan; Ghana included. The figure Ghana has for its energy transition plan for example is more than ten times worthy more than that of South Africa, a much bigger economy,” he said.
Dr. Yao Graham further called for investment in renewable energies as Africa prepares to transition from fossil fuels: “Investment in renewable energy could be one of the targets of how you use your oil and gas revenue so that you are spending to transition”
We need to add value, we need to do more than exporting raw minerals and the need for Africa as a continent most impacted by climate change to take climate change seriously and also prepare its own plans for transitioning from fossil fuel to renewables,” he added.
