Andre Ayew will close the gap between Asamoah Gyan and himself should he feature in the Black Stars’ 2023 AFCON qualifying games against Madagascar and the Central African Republic next month.
Gyan, 36, holds the record as the most capped Ghana international with 109 appearances in the Black Stars jersey.
However, Ayew is closing in on that record as he is just 7 games away from equalling that record. The Al Sadd forward has already arrived in Accra ahead of the 2023 AFCON qualifying games against Madagascar and the Central African Republic.
Should he feature in the two games in Cape Coast and the Barthélémy Boganda Stadium in Bangui, he will earn his 104th cap and that will leave him with just 6 games to break Gyan’s record.
Gyan made his international debut at the age of 17, three days before his 18th birthday. He then scored on his senior international debut for Ghana against Somalia on 19 November 2003 in the 90th minute.
Since then the forward earned 109 caps and is the all-time top-scorer with 51 goals.
Meanwhile, Ayew made his Ghana debut on 21st August 2007 in an international friendly match against Senegal.
However, he had to wait for 3 years before scoring his first goal in the Ghana colours as he netted in the Black Stars’ 1-0 win over Burkina Faso during the 2010 AFCON in Angola.
