Don’t compare yourself to Roger Milla – ex-Black Stars talisman cautions Asamoah Gyan [Akoma FM]

Former Ghana international Mohammed Polo has cautioned Asamoah Gyan to desist from comparing his situation to that of Roger Milla in 1990.

In an interview with the BBC, Gyan said he could be Ghana’s Roger Milla when the Black Stars play in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

In 1990, Gyan received a phone call from President of Cameroon Paul Biya, who pleaded with him to come out of international retirement and rejoin the national team. He agreed and went to Italy with the Indomitable Lions for the 1990 World Cup, where he would cause a sensation.

Even though the 36-year-old insists he hasn’t retired from active football, the former Sunderland and Al Ain forward hasn’t tasted competitive football since leaving Ghana Premier League side Legon Cities.

Furthermore, he hasn’t played for the Black Stars since July 2019 in the AFCON tournament in Egypt.

Polo, who was capped 54 times with 20 goals for Ghana, has been reacting to Gyan’s comments and has advised Gyan on what to do if he wants to play at the World Cup.

“Is he (Gyan) actively playing now? We know what he can do when he is active, so if he wants to play again for the Black Stars, he should register for a local team just like Sulley and prove his worth. Everything stops with the coach (Otto Addo),” he is quoted as telling Kumasi-based Akoma FM.

“Roger Mila did the same and played well in the World Cup but the question is this: are the situations the same?”

“We must be serious with our football, this is our fourth time going to the world cup and Ghana wants to make an impact,” he added.
