Encroachment on ECG transmission site threat to Owabi Dam – Sanitation Ministry
The Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources has described as unacceptable, trespassing by private developers on the Electricity Company of Ghana’s (ECG) transmission site at Adoato in the Ashanti Region.
The encroachment, according to the Ministry, is a threat to the operations of the Owabi Dam, given the fact that the plant was powered by cables from the transmission site.
It has, therefore, directed that the Management of the ECG should work with officials of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) to halt any further invasion.
“If immediate action is not taken to evict the encroachers and stop their activities, a quarter of the region could be without electricity and water supply,” Mrs Cecilia Abenaa Dapaah, the sector Minister, who was paying a working visit to the encroached site at Adoato noted.
The authorities, she said, should also take the necessary measures to cordon off the area to ward off prospective developers who might have acquired any part of the site for construction purposes.
The Management of ECG had warned of an imminent power and water crisis within the Greater Kumasi area if stringent measures are not instituted to check encroachment on lands bordering transmission sites and power lines.
The power distributor is worried as the situation is adversely affecting its operations, including regular maintenance works.
According to the ECG, people have encroached on their network, substations, lines and cables.
Mr Frederick Kwabena Bediako, the ECG Regional General Manager for Network Project, said the invasion of the company’s transmission sites and other property is seriously affecting their operations.
