Ghana Premier League: Gold Stars 0-1 Hearts of Oak – James Sewornu’s tenacious strike seals victory for Phobians in Bibiani

Hearts of Oak stretched their unbeaten run in the Ghana Premier League to 6 games following their 1-0 victory over Gold Stars at the Duns Park in Bibiani on Saturday.

Defender James Sewornu scored the games’ solitary goal through a 30th minute wonder fully taken effort from the edge of the box.

The strike was a beautifully calculated and worked out team goal. A good display from the middle saw a pass flighted to Daniel Afriyie Barnieh who took his time to locate the run of Sewornu. The 22-year-old hammered a powerful drive that beat Ernest Kussi who stretched to his elastic limits.

But, before the Hearts of Oak first goal, 17-year old winger Frank Adjei Junior cut his way through the Hearts of Oak backline as he went past Sewornu and swerved Mohammed Alhassan before unleashing a good drive which sailed to touch.

Benjamin Yorke also worked a ball for Sewornu but the makeshift right-back skied his chance.

Afriyie Barnieh scrolled past Amofa as he teased the defender to create a channel for the arriving Sewornu and the enterprising right-back applied a fierce half-volley that sailed unstoppably to the far right corner.

After the break, Gold Stars created a number of chances but were unable to utilise them before the game came to a close.

The Phobians, who have two games in hand have moved to 17 points.
