Ghanaian journalists safe after attack by Nigeria fans Ghana-Nigeria clash

Ghanaian journalists who were at the Moshood Abiola Stadium to report the second leg encounter of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier playoff between Nigeria and Ghana are safe, JoySports understands.

Following the end of the game by the referee at the match venue which meant the Black Stars booked their ticket to Qatar after a 1-1 aggregate scoreline, fans of the Super Eagles invaded the pitch, with attacks aimed at the Nigeria players, Ghanaian players as well as Ghanaian supporters at the stadium

However, speaking on Joy FM after the heated moment, JoySports George Addo Junior said, “I am fine. I was taken away from the stadium by our very great friend, Oluwashina Okeleji, who led me, Fentuo [Tahiru], [Daniel] Koranteng, Eric Asiedu, Cobby Stone, about seven of us.”

“He had to lead us to a quiet room to wait for the tensions to die down because after the game there very unsavoury scenes across and it was very dangerous for a Ghanaian fan because the Nigerians did not take it likely the fact that they had gathered in their numbers and it was Ghana who knocked them out of the World Cup qualifications.

“We are lucky and we are safe. We are now waiting in the press conference room. It appears there is not going to be any press conference and I think the reason will be security. The Nigerian team are not comfortable coming because they don’t know what is going to happen to them… I don’t think they are going to risk coming here.”
