Ghanaians know the right thing but they’ll not do it – Asamoah Gyan criticises Ghanaian fans [Asempa FM]

Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has gone hard on Ghanaian fans for failing to project him positively on the international stage.

Gyan, who turns 37 in November, has recently generated major talking points in the West African nation after he declared himself available for selection for the 2022 FIFA World Cup tournament in Qatar.

The former Sunderland and Stade Rennes forward is Ghana’s all-time top-scorer with 51 goals and the highest appearance maker although current captain Andre Ayew is closing in with just 2 caps left to equal his record.

Furthermore, Gyan scored Ghana’s first goal at the FIFA World Cup and is Africa’s leading scorer at the FIFA World Cup with 6 goals, spanning 3 tournaments – 2006, 2010, and 2014.

Despite these tremendous individual achievements in the colours of the West African powerhouse, Gyan feels under-appreciated by his countrymen whom he feels have always unfairly criticised him.

“One thing about Ghanaians is that they know the right thing. Instead of them putting you out there, they would not do it. But, when foreigners praise their [own] that is [when] they bring their star,” he was quoted in an audio aired by Asempa FM on Tuesday morning.

“I was on social media and I saw Cristiano Ronaldo score in 9 consecutive tournaments. He didn’t break my record but rather he equalled mine. Because I was the only player who had scored in 9 consecutive tournaments. And, then when Ronaldo scored, they put him there that he was the one who had set that record. Then Ghanaians started attacking the one who posted it. My point is, why didn’t they say it for people to know?”

“In my own country, you see people disrespecting me and creating a lot of stories about me. Which I feel like it is not it. When I see people defending me on social media, I just sit down and say look at these hypocrites,” he said.
