I will support Asamoah Gyan’s inclusion in the 2022 World Cup squad if… – Ghana’s deputy Minister for Youth and Sports [Happy FM]

Ghana’s deputy Minister for Youth and Sports Hon. Evans Opoku Bobbie believes Asamoah Gyan should be considered for a place in the Black Stars squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup if he is able to keep his fitness.

Gyan told the BBC in mid-August that he could be Ghana’s Roger Milla at the Qatar World Cup, insisting he hasn’t retired from active football.

The comment from the ex-Stade Rennes forward has sharply divided opinions in the country with many insisting Gyan should not be considered.

Ghana legend Mohammed Polo cautioned the forward to desist from comparing his situation to the Cameroonian legend.

However, the deputy sector minister has given his opinion on Gyan.

“If he improves his fitness and we can take him, I will support it. On the world stage he has the experience,” he said on Wamputu Sports.

“The Plan B could be that if we help him to score at the World Cup he extends his World Cup record which also gives Ghana more mileage. He has that fear factor that many countries know of. But it all bows down to the technical team to select him. We at the Sports Ministry are concerned about policy direction and not selecting players,” he added.

The 36-year-old hasn’t played for the Black Stars since July 2019 in the AFCON tournament in Egypt.
