PPP condemns 'disgraceful' attack on UTV; urges media not to be intimidated

The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) is asking the media not to be frightened or intimidated by the disgraceful invasion of the studios of UTV by thugs alleged to be members of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In a statement condemning the irresponsible act, the PPP insisted that the act was aimed at silencing the media from carrying out their constitutional mandate.

The party said Ghana’s democracy can also become stronger when diverse views and opinions are allowed to be shared on national issues and not curtailed.

The statement signed by its National Chairman, Nana Ofori Owusu, urged the media not to be cowed into silence but rather take solace in the situation.

“The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) strongly encourages the media to hold the government accountable. The media should not feel threatened by state or party actions aimed at silencing them. It is through a free and independent media that we can ensure transparency, address grievances, and work towards the common good of all citizens,” an excerpt of the statement said.

What happened at UTV?

A group of young men obstructed the normal programming at the station shortly after their United Showbiz programme began.

Subsequent online videos showed the group claiming to be affiliated to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) storming the UTV studios during the live broadcast to demand an apology from one of the panellists, A-Plus.

They claimed he had insulted the party, the president and the vice president. The Ghana Police Service subsequently arrested 16 of them.

Following their arrest, the host of the show, MzGee, apologised to viewers for the disruption and assured everyone of their safety.

Meanwhile, the attack on UTV has evoked widespread condemnation from Ghanaians, who have called for swift action to bring those responsible to justice.
