Lamashegu Chief calls for immediate release of 6 persons arrested
The Chief of Lamashegu, Naa Ziblim Mahama, has called for the immediate release of six people who were arrested on Sunday in connection with the Lamashegu violence.
He said his people cannot be brutalised and still be locked up for no crime committed.
Addressing the Regional Security Committee (RESEC), the Chief said the Police could not continue disrespecting the Traditional Authorities in Region and abusing the people without provocation.
Naa Ziblim said Sunday’s event should mark the end of such abuse of power by the Police in the Region.
The Chief expressed his displeasure and called for a dialogue on recruiting people into the country Security Service.
He said there is the need to decouple protocol from the enlistment process.
“Coordinating Director, tell government they should stop forcing people on the Police and military during enlistment into the service. It’s now about this big man, or child or the other. If you force your children on them, can their bosses discipline them? That is why they are killing our children,” he said.
The Chief said the country’s partisan politics has infiltrated the security services and is one of the reasons these issues are coming up.
The Lamashegu Chief recounted the recent brutalities in Nakpan Zou and Changli as some of the incidents that have gone unpunished and called for a thorough investigation into this lasted one to bring final to what he described as unprofessional conduct of the Police in the Region.
The Mayor of Tamale, Sule Salifu, who spoke on behalf of the team, thanked the Chief for his role in saving the lives of the police officers who were almost lynched.
He said the Police have begun investigations into the matter, adding that six officers have been interdicted.
Mr Sule added that a team of cops have been dispatched from the headquarters to assist with the investigation.
He said RESEC will meet to address the demands the Chief had made.
