The Exporters and Importers Association has voiced its disappointment with President Nana Akufo-Addo for approving the three new taxes passed by Parliament in March 2023.
The union claims that the government did not address their concerns regarding the taxes when they submitted a petition to the presidency and parliament.
On Monday, Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah confirmed to Citi News that the president had given his assent to the three new taxes.
In an interview with Citi News, the Executive Secretary of the Exporters and Importers Association, Sampson Asaki Awingobit stated that it was not the appropriate time to impose taxes on businesses.
“This is not the right time to introduce new taxes. The temperature is not right at all. You have the business community up in arms against you, and you throw caution to the wind and make such a decision?”
“This bill the President has signed is dead on arrival. We doubt the companies will even make any profits that can be taxed. I know companies that have been making 40% losses every month.”
