GPL Week 16 Preview: Hearts host Olympics in ‘Mantse’ derby, Bechem play AshGold

The 2021/22 Ghana Premier League season enters the penultimate gameweek this weekend before the end of the first round.

After 15 weeks of action, Asante Kotoko sit top of the league table with seven points above Bechem United in the second position while Accra Hearts of Oak are 10 points behind their fierce rivals.

Hearts will be in action this weekend when they play Great Olympics in the Mantse derby on Sunday at the Accra Sports Stadium.

In the last five games involving this pair, each team has got two wins while one of their meetings has ended in a stalemate. However, the Phobians last beat the Wonder club in 2020.

Gladson Awako will play against his former club for the first time since leaving Olympics at the end of last season while new signing Sulley Muntari could also make his debut for Samuel Boadu’s men.

Bechem United get the matchday 16 underway with an encounter against AshantiGold Sporting Club. The Bechem-based side have been in superb form in the first 15 games of the season and will target a win over the Miners.

Accra Lions and Medeama Sporting Club will also come up against each other in the capital while King Faisal host Real Tamale United at the Baba Yara Stadium. The Insha Alla boys are without a win in their last four games while they have lost just one of their last five home games.

At the Dun’s Park, Bibiani Gold Stars after making additions to their squad in the ongoing transfer window will face Aduana Stars. The Ogya boys parted ways with head coach Joseph Asare Bediako following their defeat to Bechem last weekend.

Dreams FC and Berekum Chelsea will go head-to-head at the Theatre of Dreams in Dawu while Techiman Eleven Wonders welcome WAFA to the Ohene Ameyaw Park with Karela United also engaging Legon Cities at the Crosby Awuah Memorial Park.

League leaders, Kotoko have the opportunity to maintain their lead at the summit with an away game against struggling Elmina Sharks up next for the Porcupine Warriors. Justice Blay is in line to make his second debut for the Kumasi-based club on Monday.
