Girls in Aviation Day Celebrated at Kotoka International Airport
The 9th Girls in Aviation Day was joyously celebrated at Kotoka International Airport, showcasing the significance of women in aviation and inspiring young women to explore career opportunities in the industry. This global event, organized by Women in Aviation International (WAI), witnessed enthusiastic participation from Ghana’s own WAI chapter, comprised of dedicated women professionals from the aviation sector.
Sponsored by the WAI Ghana Chapter, selected students from prestigious institutions including Accra Girls, Temasco, Ola Girls, Lashibi, and Afia Kobi Senior High Schools had the privilege of attending this year’s celebration. The event aimed to ignite the passion for aviation among young girls, introducing them to the possibilities and encouraging their pursuit of careers within the aviation industry.
In her welcome address, Madam Juliet Okae, the President of WAI Ghana Chapter and Deputy Director-General (Finance and Administration) of Ghana Civil Aviation Authority emphasized the chapter’s role in uniting women in aviation and fostering the potential of Africa’s youth, especially young girls. She underscored the importance of the Girls in Aviation program as a flagship initiative of Women in Aviation International, which annually aspires to inspire young girls and prepare them for future aviation careers. Madam Okae also highlighted the chapter’s plans to establish aviation clubs in senior high schools to stimulate interest among the youth, particularly young girls.
Mrs. Pamela Djamson-Tettey, the Managing Director of Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), praised the WAI Ghana Chapter for orchestrating the event and emphasized the dynamic and rapidly evolving nature of the aviation industry. She lauded the pioneering efforts of women professionals across various aviation disciplines, ranging from Airline Managers and Aircraft Engineers to Air Traffic Controllers and Aviation Security Officers. Mrs. Djamson-Tettey encouraged the attending young girls to make the most of the opportunity by actively participating in educational sessions and tours, envisioning a future where they could share their experiences with their peers.
Hon. Hassan Tampuli, Deputy Minister for Transport and Member of Parliament for Gushegu Constituency in the Northern Region addressed the gathering, acknowledging the untapped potential within the aviation industry. He commended the attending young girls for their unique exposure and urged them to embrace their privileged status by working diligently to realize their full potential. Hon. Tampuli highlighted the significant contributions of women in aviation, challenging the girls to emulate their achievements and aspire to careers in the sector.
Women in Aviation International, a nonprofit organization, remains dedicated to encouraging and advancing women in all facets of aviation and aerospace careers. Through programs like the Annual Girls in Aviation Day, they continue to inspire and empower the next generation of female aviation professionals, both nationally and internationally.
The celebration at Kotoka International Airport served as a testament to the importance of supporting and nurturing young girls’ dreams and aspirations within the exciting world of aviation.
