Make floral business more appealing to youth -StratComms

Stakeholders within the agriculture, horticulture and floriculture value chain are being encouraged to make the business of planting more appealing as employment avenues to the teeming youth.

This, according to the Ghana Garden and Flower Movement – an initiative by Strategic Communications Africa will partly help address the high instances of unemployment amongst the youth in the country.

Speaking at the launch of the 11th edition of the Ghana Garden and Flower Show in Ghana, the Chief Executive of Strategic Communication Africa, Esther Cobbah urged the youth to leverage on emerging technologies to maximize the employment opportunities in the flowery industry.

“These days in the digital age, technology has become very useful in floriculture. The youth can look at the different aspect of floriculture and see where they can fit. The Youth can benefit from production and marketing the flowers. They just need to understand what the earth gives and know the plants that can be cultivated in Ghana,” she said.

On her part, the Resident Representative of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Angela Lusigi encouraged women entrepreneurs to make optimize the avenues in the flowery industry.

The eleventh edition of the Ghana Garden and Flower Show in Ghana is scheduled to take off on 30th August – 3rd September 2023.

About the Ghana garden and flower show

The innovative Ghana Garden and Flower Movement (GGFM) was initiated by Strategic Communications Africa, Ltd. (Stratcomm Africa) in 2013 when the first Ghana Garden and Flower Show, the flagship activity of the movement, was also held.

The movement seeks to contribute to the realization of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) by creating awareness among Ghanaians about the environmental, commercial, aesthetic, and psychological and health benefits of horticulture, floriculture and agriculture.

It seeks to celebrate Ghana’s unique flora and fauna, herbs, spices and vegetables whilst pointing people to the income-generating and job creation opportunities inherent in them.

The Show is designed to showcase agriculture, horticulture and floriculture in Ghana and stimulate awareness of the potential for national development and improved livelihoods from harnessing this industry.
