UN to commit over $500 million to Ghana towards achieving SDG targets

The United Nations Resident Coordinator to Ghana, Charles Abani has disclosed that the UN is set to commit over $500 million dollars to Ghana.

According to him, this amount when fully disbursed to the country will help Ghana achieve its targets for the Sustainable Development Goals which will open up the country for growth.

Charles Abani made these comments at the signing of the Compact for the Implementation of United Nations Sustainable Development Corporation Framework between the UN and the government of Ghana.

“This Cooperation Framework, the most important instrument for planning and implementation of UN development activities in Ghana, outlines our integrated contributions to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and to Ghana’s development priorities,” he said.

“For three years, starting 2023 to 2025, the United Nations will deploy an estimated US$500 million, to empower institutions and people through capacity development and other provisions, supporting mainly three key areas – inclusive economic transformation, equitable access to basic social services, and durable peace and security in Ghana and across the sub region, especially to those most left behind,” he disclosed.

On his part, the Minister of State in charge of Finance, Mohammed Amin Adam who signed the compact on behalf of government indicated that the funds will support government’s drive in restoring economic resilience.

“The signing of this Cooperation Framework with a total grant envelope of US$517million reaffirms a continuation of our strategic partnership with the UN which clearly aligns with Governments development agenda and contributes to the achievements of global and regional commitments under the 2030 and 2063 Agendas,” he said.

“ Over the next three years in the areas of: Inclusive, Resilient and Sustainable Economic Growth and Transformation; Accessible, Equitable, Inclusive, Sustainable Quality Basic Social Services; and Durable Peace and Security in Ghana and the Sub-region,” he added.
