Commonwealth Games Day 3 Preview: Ghana eye better show in boxing, beach volley and hockey

It’s another chance to shine light on Ghana’s best performers at the ongoing Commonwealth Games following a dismal first two days.

A series of losses across almost every discipline has been the story of Team Ghana in Birmingham, while one of the nation’s top boxers has also failed a doping test. Read more here.

On Saturday, seven athletes will compete in individual sports while two team sports aim to advance into the next stages of the competition.

Following a failure to advance in women’s 50m breaststroke on Day 2, Unilez Takyi will give it another go in the women’s 50m freestyle. The teenager, 17, came fourth on Friday and will hope to advance this time.

Her colleague, Kow Jackson – whose brother Abeku also failed to advance in the pool on Friday – takes his chances in the men’s 200m freestyle.

In boxing, featherweight Joseph Commey engages Betero Aaree from Kiribati. It is quietly believed that Ghana’s best chance of medals at these Games partly rest on the boxing team, the Black Bombers.

There will also be cycling action, beach volleyball preliminaries as well as weightlifting and table tennis.
