18m SIM cards fully registered so far – Communications Ministry

The Communications and Digitalisation Ministry has revealed that 18,930,664 SIM cards have been registered fully so far.

Owners of these SIM cards, the Ministry explained, have completed both stage 1 and 2 of the SIM re-registration process.

The number represents 44.28% of the total SIM cards issued.

According to the Ministry, a total of 42,749,662 SIM cards have been issued nationally with just 28,959,006 SIM Cards linked to Ghana Cards (thus completed stage 1 process).

This was contained in a statement from the Communications Ministry on October 17. The figures recorded are from October 1, 2021 to October 4, 2022.

The Ministry said 13,720,687 unique counts of Ghana cards have been used so far for the registration exercise.

The Ministry noted that although it has not yet achieved its target, it has chalked a significant achievement so far with the registration exercise.

After an earlier deadline of September 30 to be registered, Communications Minister, Ursula Owusu noted that SIM cards that have completed just stage one of the re-registration processes now have a grace period till October 31 to complete the process.

“All SIM Cards that have been linked to Ghana cards (i.e. completed Stage 1 registration), but have not completed their Stage 2 registration will be blocked from the end of October. This is not an extension of the deadline but a temporary moratorium to encourage these individuals to complete the process. If they have any peculiar challenges, they should contact the NCA… All other unregistered SIMs will also be blocked progressively.”

SIM cards that are being used for data only also have until the end of November to complete their registration process.

The Minister also acknowledged that some citizens have had difficulties obtaining Ghana cards to enable them to undertake their SIM registration.

She said 1.3 million Ghanaians have been issued their Ghana cards but have not collected them.

“This is regrettable and we will continue to engage the National Identification Authority to expedite the process,” the statement added.
