Ghanaian artistes rejected my call for collaboration – UK-based DJ

A UK-born Ghanaian DJ and producer, Nickie Cartel, has disclosed that he reached out to Ghanaian artistes for collaboration but his requests were rejected.

He attributed the situation to the general lack of trust and support some of the musicians have for one another, making them lag behind on the global music market.

In an interview with KMJ on Prime Morning, Nickie Cartel recounted times that he needed collaborations with some Afrobeat artistes to promote Ghana’s music but was ignored.

“When I came, I was saying to the Afrobeat guys, ‘let me remix your tracks into house music’. I DJ in Adissa, one of the best places that you can play as a house DJ. I said let’s work together, but they weren’t ready,” he said.

“We have to fight a mentality, a culture that we’re coming against and it’s a culture of distrust. There’s always distrust instead of you’re a creative, I’m a creative. Let’s come together, let’s brainstorm, let’s work together and move on.”

Nickie Cartel also mentioned how managers of Sarkodie, Stonebwoy, and Shatta Wale ‘swerved’ his phone calls him from 2015 till date – despite having their contacts, he is yet to meet the artistes.

Being the first Ghanaian to play house music internationally, DJ Nickie is optimistic and passionate about promoting African music across the world.

He urged aspiring musicians to adopt a new mindset and support one another in order to make Ghana music a global success.

He is, however, ready to collaborate with any talented Afrobeat artiste who is ready to establish his or her music career.

Nickie Cartel is currently touring Ghana with his Amapiano Afrobeat twist to entertain and create an avenue for upcoming musicians.
