Ghana to generate £120m annually from tomato exports to Britain

The Chief Executive of the Chamber of Agribusiness Ghana, Anthony Morrison, has said that Ghana could rake in £120 million annually from tomato exports to the United Kingdom.

According to him, Ghana has the potential to generate more revenue from tomato exports.

The UK is experiencing shortage because it relies on Morocco, Netherlands and Spain for tomato supply, but production have slowed down in these countries due to climate change.

“Roughly UK’s fresh tomato importation is about £524 million, but then they import another one billion pounds of assorted vegetables. So we would not only be looking at just tomatoes but other critical vegetables that the UK consumer market will need”.

“Even though our initial projected earnings from the tomatoes is at £120 million, this could rise to £200 million depending on the quantity and other varieties that we’ll engage them on,” he stated.

Mr. Morrison told Joy Business that his outfit in partnership with the British High Commission are working to take advantage of the challenge and export Ghanaian tomatoes to the UK.

“We’re engaging the Department for International Trade at the British High Commission to profile prospective buyers of tomatoes from Ghana for the UK market. We expect to conclude discussions within a week and start exporting” he disclosed.

Ghana has the perfect climate for producing tomatoes, however the country is faced with post-harvest losses.

Mr. Morrison believes this would help address the challenge.
