World Athletics Championships: Deborah Acquah fails to make final of women’s long jump

Ghana’s long jump athlete, Deborah Acquah, has failed to make the final of the women’s long jump in the ongoing World Athletics Championships in Eugene, USA.

The 24-year-old recorded two faulty jumps at the start of the qualification, before recording a 6.47m distance in her last attempt.

But the distance fell short of the qualification mark of 6.75m and did not rank among the top 12 jumps in both Group A and B, ultimately eliminating her.

It’s a disappointing outing for the Texas A&M graduate, who set a national record (6.89m) in the lead up to the competition and ranked 5th in the event globally.

“I think it’s nervousness. I’ve jumped here before, twice and I thought I would be good,” she told Joy Sports.

“But I had a broken achilles and my coach and I had to go around late last night looking for all kinds of medication to help me numb the pain. So I haven’t also really been 100%.

“I am disappointed because I’ve worked really hard for this all year and I really wanted to make the final,” she said.

Acquah, who just graduated from University, will immediately turn her attention to the Commonwealth Games which take place in Birmingham, United Kingdom from July 28-8 August, 2022
