“We want to support farmers to end hunger by 2030” – Golden Star Wassa

Golden Star Wassa Limited, one of Ghana’s leading gold producing companies says it is determined to support farmers in its operational areas to help achieve the sustainable development goal two of ending hunger in all its forms by 2030.

The company says it has thus put in measures to support farmers through its sustainable livelihood development project.

According to the company, in alignment with the government’s effort to enhance food security in the country, Golden Star Resources (GSR) continuously seeks to empower and support farmers in its catchment areas in agriculture programs under sustainable livelihood projects in the area of vegetable farming, poultry, and piggery grass cutter and rabbit rearing to elevate the quality of lives of our people.

This was revealed by the VP/MD of the company, Shadrach Adjetey Sowah during the presentation of agriculture items to three district assemblies to support the 39th edition of National Farmers’ Day.

 “Delivering smart solutions to sustainable and resilience food security underscores our collective responsibility to transition from subsistence agriculture to a business oriented approach. This shift will not only enhance nutrition, health and economic gains, but also promote value chain development and entrepreneurship,” he stated.

According to him, the support given to the district assemblies is a testament of the company’s commitment of helping to building a strong relationship with its host communities for the betterment of all parties.

“As a developing partner, Golden Star Resources continue to provide agriculture inputs to the district assemblies as part of our corporate social responsibility initiatives,” he mentioned.

Mr. Adjetey Sowah explained that Golden Star Resources (GSR) is actively promoting agriculture entrepreneurship as a way of transforming farming in their catchment communities.

“GSR, as part of its commitment to fostering positive relationship with its host communities, signed three MOUs with its catchment communities in 2019; one of them being relationship and sustainable livelihood. This means the company is actively working towards transforming agriculture within its catchment by ensuring its sustainability and promoting entrepreneurship,” he said.

He wants the district assemblies within which they operate to help them identify more agriculture interventions for the sustainable development of the areas

“I also appeal to the Wasaa district assemblies to continue supporting and collaborating with Golden Star Resources to identify more agribusiness interventions that will highly be impactful, results-focused, and sustainable in improving agriculture productivity in the communities,” he stated.

The donated items worth GH₵245,700 included wellington boots, machetes, bicycles, knapsack sprayers, wheelbarrows, and tricycles, and were presented to Wassa East, Mpohor, and Twifo Atti-Morkwa district assemblies.
