Limited Voters’ Registration: Consider opening a new centre for Wa East District – MP to EC
Wa East MP Dr Godfred Seidu Jasaw, is asking the Electoral Commission (EC) to set up a new registration centre for the Wa Wast District in the ongoing limited voters’ registration exercise.
According to the MP, who is also the Deputy Ranking Member on Parliament’s Agriculture and Cocoa Affairs Committee, accessibility to the district capital where the exercise is being undertaken is a daunting task for his constituents.
Dr Jasaw said most eligible voters who have the desire to register cannot make the journey to the Wa East District capital – Funsi – to partake in the exercise.
Speaking in an interview with JoyNews’ Upper West Regional Correspondent, Rafik Salaam, the lawmaker pleaded with the EC to consider opening another registration centre for the district.
“The situation we find ourselves in is a big constraint to us in accessibility and also for the exercise of registering new voters. The Wa East case is a unique one and the capital is in Funsi. Accessing Funsi is a very difficult situation and the road to the place has been cut off by the rivers, so that is our challenge now.”
“So the choice of district capital for this registration is a huge constraint. So I would like to call on government and the EC to consider opening a new registration center for the Wa East District otherwise most eligible voters cannot get the capital and register,” he said.
The EC on Tuesday, September 12, commenced the 2023 limited voters’ registration exercise at its 268 district offices.
This is in spite agitations by almost all the opposition political parties and injunction suits.
The Electoral Commission says it registered a total of 182,831 voters in the first six days of the exercise.
This was announced by the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa, at a press briefing in Accra, dubbed, “Let The Citizen Know” on Monday.
“At the end of six days, we have recorded a total of 182,831 registered voters. Western region recorded 11,644 representing 6.4% of persons registered; Western North registered 6,491 representing 3.6%; Central region registered 17,590 representing 9.6%; Greater Accra region has registered 27,264 representing 14.9%; Volta region registered 12,681 representing 6.9%.”
“Oti region registered 4,427 representing 2.4%; Eastern region registered 19,327 representing 10.6%; Ashanti region registered 29,255 representing 16%, Bono region registered 6,580 representing 3.6%; Ahafo region registered 4,244 representing 2.3%; Upper East registered 8,639 representing 4.7% and Upper West region registered 5,241 representing 2.9%,” Mrs Mensa stated.
