Livestream: Newsfile discusses NDC’s electoral reforms, government’s Agenda 111 hospitals

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) after a series of consultations has proposed some electoral reforms.

The NDC noted that the reforms are geared towards restoring the credibility and integrity of Ghana’s electoral process.”

Among other things, the opposition party is proposing that Chairpersons of the Electoral Commission (EC) must be appointed after Parliament has approved their nominations.

Also, it is suggesting that the list of all polling stations to be used for an election with their names, code numbers, and locations should be published in the Gazette and as supplements in the state newspapers not later than 30 days.

However, after delivering the document to the Electoral Commission headquarters, Accra, the EC directed the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to table its proposed electoral reforms before the Interparty Advisory Committee (IPAC) for dialogue.

The Commission said it is open to suggestions and feedback to enhance the country’s electoral process but insists IPAC is the appropriate forum for such suggestions.

Several key persons in the NDC have described the EC’s actions as disrespectful.

Also on the show, the panel will be discussing a petition filed by two legislators – Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, North Tongu MP and Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah of Ellembelle to the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) asking that it investigates the deaths that occurred during the 2020 polls.

The petition is lodged against the Ministers of Interior and Defence, the Inspector General of the Ghana Police Service, and the Chief of Defence Staff of Ghana Armed Forces.

The petition bothers mainly, on events that happened at the Techiman South, Odododiodio, Ablekuma Central, and Savelugu constituencies.

And finally, Newsfile will investigate the government’s Agenda 111 hospitals and issues raised about it concerning procurement breaches.

Architects in the country have raised concerns that the government by-passed laid down procurement protocols to award the contract to Adjaye Associates.
