Hearts of Oak defence fail to stop Berekum Chelsea’ ruthless away scoring run

Berekum Chelsea went into their clash with Hearts of Oak on Saturday hoping to perpetuate their scoring run and record their first away win of the 2022/23 campaign.

However, Christopher Ennin’s men were able to achieve one of their targets with the other falling flat at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Prior to the contest, the Blues had netted 9 times in their 8 consecutive away games in the 2022/23 season.

Hearts of Oak coach Slavko Matic named Konadu Yiadom, Dennis Korsah, Samuel Inkoom, and Rober Addo Sowah with Eric Esso being the block in front of the defence.

Chelsea had former Asante Kotoko attacker Stephen Amankonah returning to the set up with Mezack Afriyie also leading the attack.

Zakaria Fuseini scored an 82nd-minute own-goal to hand the opener to the Phobians before Benjamin York made light work of the Chelsea keeper Ernest Sowah to double the advantage for the Phobians.

However, it was Kusi Pandrous who climbed off the bench to net the consolation goal for the visitors but the Phobians were not done yet as Victor Aidoo came on from the substitute bench to score the 3rd goal to cement the victory for the former African champions.

This becomes the first time Hearts of Oak have hit 3 past Berekum Chelsea at the Accra Sports Stadium since September 6, 2015, when Kofi Owusu scored twice to cut the goals from Thomas Abbey, Emmanuel Hayford, and Ruben Gnagne.

The result has moved Hearts to 2nd spot temporarily.
