Match Report: Ghana 1-0 South Africa – Black Stars clinch top spot in Group G to qualify to next phase of qualifiers

Ghana’s Black Stars secured a valuable 1-0 win over South Africa’s Bafana Bafana to clinch top in Group G in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Andre Ayew scored the only goal of the game with a 33rd-minute penalty at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium.

Jordan Ayew was played through by Wakaso Mubarak on the 9th-minute mark but the Crystal Palace forward woefully fluffed his lines as he miserably shot wide.

Kudus Mohammed seemingly suffered a rib injury and was replaced by St Pauli midfielder Daniel-Kofi Kyereh with just 13 minutes on the clock.

The substitute was presented with a good chance to score the opening goal as he was set free by Baba Iddrissu Mohammed. The attacking midfielder disappointingly blazed his effort over the crossbar.

Meanwhile, South Africa’s Bongokuhle Hlongwane was next to receive a good chance to score but he was adjudged to have fouled Daniel Amartey before firing at Wollacott who saved the ball.

Kyereh delivered a corner from the left and a scramble inside the box resulted in Daniel Amartey being fouled by a Rushine de Reuck. The Senegalese referee awarded a penalty to Ghana and Andre Ayew sent Williams Ronwen the wrong way to put Ghana.

Kamaldeen Sulemana switched into the gear in the second half as the South Africans came into the game strongly. In quicksilver moves, he zigzagged through the backline and came close to scoring on three different occasions but he missed in all situations. In one of such moves, he pressurized the Bafana Bafana defence to commit themselves including the goalkeeper. But, he was unlucky as he fired wide.

Meanwhile, Percy Tau put in good energy as he beat two Ghanaian defenders but when he pulled his trigger it was straight to Wollacott.
