Ghana Premier League: Kotoko 1-0 WAFA – Richmond Lamptey’s strike help Kotoko to move second

Giants Asante Kotoko moved on points terms with leaders King Faisal after edging out visitors WAFA 1-0 at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Sunday afternoon in matchday 10 of the Ghana Premier League.

Midfield talisman Richmond Lamptey scored the game’s solitary goal with a 58th-minute finish as the Porcupine Warriors the Sogakope-based youngsters for the first time since 2017. In that encounter at the same venue, winger Frank Sarfo Gyamfi came off the bench to score a 64th-minute winner for the Red army.

Prosper Narteh Ogum, the head coach for Kotoko, was in the dugout last season when WAFA held the 23-time Ghanaian champions to 1-1 drawn games in both of last season’s fixtures.

Kotoko went into the game without influential youngster Isaac Oppong as well as Samuel Boateng who both missed the tie due to various degrees of injury.

Stephen Amankona, who joined from Berekum Chelsea at the start of the season, should have put Kotoko ahead in the early moments but his free went against the human shield constructed by the WAFA defence.

Talented midfielder Godwin Agbevor applied a great display of skill in the middle to play through Lawrence Agyekum but the youngster missed the chance as WAFA attempted a response to Kotoko’s early incursions.

Amankona was denied his first competitive goal for Kotoko on the 23rd-minute mark as his header from a corner kick beat everybody in the WAFA defensive set up with the exception of the goalpost that denied him.

At the other end, Lawrence Agyekum and Justus Torsutsey combined to create a scoring opportunity but the military man’s attempt lob over Razak Abalora missed woefully.

Referee Akwasi Frimpong created a moment of controversy when he awarded a penalty to Kotoko following an incident inside the box involving Franck Mbella and WAFA goalkeeper Kwadwo Bonsu. Upon consultation with his assistant referee, the center man reversed his decision.

Amankona displayed good dribbling skills and vision on the ball as he created a host of chances for Kotoko with a particular chance that put Richmond Lamptey close to registering the opener on the 12 minutes from the interval.

Amankona once again played through George Mfegue Omgba on the 56th minute but the Cameroonian headed his ball into the path of the WAFA man in the area.

However, Lamptey got the winner for Kotoko a minute later when he maintained his resilience inside the area to finish off a chance that had earlier been blocked by the WAFA defence.
