South Africa vs Ghana: At least one Ghana Premier League star will start for the Black Stars against Bafana Bafana

There will be at least a spot in the Black Stars starting XI for Ghana Premier League stars when the South Africa vs Ghana game kicks off on Monday afternoon in Johannesburg.

There are 7 home-based players in C.K Akonnor’s 25-man squad in South Africa to take on the Bafana Bafana at the ultra-modern FNB Stadium.

Ghana’s Black Stars continue their 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign with an away test against South Africa at the FNB Stadium on Johannesburg on Monday afternoon. And, head coach Charles Akonnor could use the occasion to offer playing minutes to some of the local players in the 25-man squad currently in South Africa.

A section of the Ghana fans are of the strong opinion that Ghana Premier League players should be offered the opportunity to start in games for the Black Stars. No home-based player featured in Friday’s 1-0 victory over the Walia Ibex of Ethiopia.

But the absence of 7 players who started the game on Friday has created spots in the team available for contention for 7 home-based players.

However there is one spot in the team that has fallen to the local-based stars.

Andy Yiadom, Reading FC, was by far Ghana’s best player in the victory over Ethiopia but is unavailable for the game due to England’s COVID-19 restrictions on travellers from South Africa. The right-back role now becomes a spot for contention between two local based stars.

Hearts of Oak captain Abdul Fatawu Mohammed and Dreams FC defender Philimon Baffour who has received high recommendations from Ghana Premier League players and coaches at the end of the current season.

After excelling with Ghana’s U20 side and being around the Black Stars in recent call-ups 20-year-old Baffour could earn the nod ahead of the 29-year-old Fatawu who was influential in Hearts of Oak’s success story this season.
