Hearts flirt with relegation second time in 8 seasons, they might not be third-time lucky

Hearts of Oak almost suffered relegation from the Ghana Premier League in the 2022/23 campaign and the situation has affected the fortunes of the club.

The Phobians escaped relegation on the final day of the season, having drawn 0-0 with Berekum Chelsea at the Golden City Park in Berekum while other results going to their advantage.

In a season the Rainbow club deployed 3 coaches, the former African champions won 12 games, lost 12 and drew 10 – while scoring 32 goals and conceding 37 in the process.

Some regard this performance as the worst by the club in recent seasons. However, that is not factual because in the 2014/15 season, the club just managed to escape from relegation on superior goal aggregate.

During that fateful season, when Alhaji Akanbi was actively involved as a board member, the club finished in 13th place with 40 points from 30 games – having won 10 games, drew 10, and lost 10 – while scoring 33 goals and conceding 31.

That was a precarious season for the Phobians as Heart of Lions, Great Olympics and B/A United suffered relegation that season.
