Kantamanto fire: We are providing additional support – Police

The Ghana Police says it has moved in to assist the personnel from other services to alleviate the situation in Kantamanto.

Parts of the area in the central business district of Accra were by fire.

The incident on Tuesday morning burnt many goods and shops worth thousands of cedis with firefighters struggling to put it the inferno.

In a statement, the police say they are “providing operational support to the Ghana National Fire Service as they work to put out a fire.”

“The Police have cordoned off the affected area to enable the fire officers to carry out their duty without any obstructions,” they said in the statement.

In this light, more policemen are also said to have been deployed to avoid “looting and also direct the movement of persons and vehicles away from the incident scene.”

The communiqué posted on social media on Tuesday further indicated that officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) are also involved in the process.

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare and Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery and the Chief Fire Officer are also at the scene.

It is not clear yet what started the inferno.

Other vendors stood by helpless as their wares burned waiting for the appropriate time to count their losses.
