Oil and Gas company, Kosmos Energy, has handed over a furnished 60-bed capacity dormitory to the Ashanti School for the Deaf and Blind.

Classrooms were previously converted to dormitories for male pupils at the Blind Unit of the school.

The ramshackle state of the school infrastructure caught the attention of Kosmos Energy which has pledged its support for educational institutions.

The Blind Unit of the Ashanti School for the Deaf and Blind is the only visually impaired institution in the middle belt of the country.

Pupils with special needs are offered basic education to enable them further to higher institutions.

However, the visually-impaired pupils struggle living in a congested and rough dormitory.

Vida Aidoo, the Headmistress of the School at Jamasi in the Sekyere South District of the Ashanti Region said: “We have a visually-impaired aside the hearing-impaired. Kosmos Energy put up this building for us. Before that, we had a very rough dormitory.

“Kosmos Energy supported us by renovating the hearing-impaired boys’ dormitory for us. They realised we had a challenge of housing the visually-impaired students in the school, so they built this edifice for us,” she said.

In February 2023, Kosmos Energy refurbished 300 beds in the school.

The company says it is focused on creating a good environment for pupils to realise their potential.

The Senior Vice President and Head of the Ghana Business Unit at Kosmos Energy, Nana Joe Mensah said “Back in February, we refurbished a 300-bed dormitory for them. Still, they were crunched for space. This was an empty land. We decided to construct a full structure.”

“The edifice is quite impressive. It is well deserving for these young ones. They have a lot to offer society. We have to keep encouraging them and create a good environment for their development and growth,” he said.

A pupil who spoke to JoyNews was grateful for the refurbishment.

“Thank you, Kosmos Energy, for building this dormitory for us. This dormitory looks beautiful. We always wanted someone to help us. We feel happy whenever we are in the dormitory. God bless you,” Louisa Adu Okyere said.
