One of these FIVE coaches is likely to be named as the new head coach of the Black Stars
A 3-man Ghana FA Executive Council panel chaired by Vice President Mark Addo has been tasked to find a new head coach for the Black Stars within a 72-hour deadline.
Charles Akonnor was fired from his role as head of the Black Stars together with two of his assistants David Duncan and Patrick Greveraar following a marathon meeting held at the headquarters of the football governing body on Monday.
Experienced administrator Dr. Ransford Abbey, Upper East Regional Football Association Chairman, Alhaji Salifu Zida, and GFA Vice President Mark Addo are the men tasked to find Ghana a replacement for Akonnor.
With 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Zimbabwe billed for October a suitable replacement must be named in the coming days to restore confidence in the team.
A coach who can command the dressing room, be firm and bold with his decisions on call up and these are the names that have popped up on the radar.
The list is in no particular order.
- Otto Addo – Borussia Dortmund
Former Ghana international and currently head of talent development at Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund. During last season’s turbulent season for Dortmund Addo was brought on frontline duty as one of the assistant coaches to Edin Terzic who was named as a manager in an interim capacity. The 46-year-old has coaching experience after picking up roles at Hamburg SV, Nordsjaelland, Borussia Monchengladbach, and Dortmund. He was capped 15 times by Ghana and played for the Black Stars at the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany.
2. George Boateng – Aston Villa
Ex-Dutch international and currently the head coach of Aston Villa’s U23 side that competes in the Premier League 2. Boateng, 46, was reportedly offered the assistant coach role back in January 2020 when Akonnor was named as the replacement for James Kwasi Appiah but he turned it down to focus on his role at Villa. But, now there is an opening for him to assume the job as the main man and he could get the job if his CV meets the criteria set by the search team.
3. Maxwell Konadu – Legon Cities
Former Ghana assistant coach under Kwasi Appiah, head of the Ghana U17 currently, former head coach of the U20 and U23 teams as well as former head coach of Asante Kotoko. He was named as head coach Legon Cities getting to the end of last season as he replaced Bashir Hayford as the head of the Royals. He has maintained an outstanding relationship with the hierarchy of the Ghana FA and he might be considered for the job on a substantive basis.
4. Mas-Ud Didi Dramani – Nordsjaelland
By far one of the most experienced Ghanaian trainers available and suitable for the job. The former Asante Kotoko and the Black Queens head coach has recently been elevated to the head of football at Right to Dream Academy. His enormous experience and impressive certificate position him as one of the leading coaches to assume the role.
5. Ibrahim Tanko Anyars – Unattached
Knows how it feels to coach at the FIFA World Cup after staying in the dugout for Cameroon during the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil where he was assistant manager to German Volker Finke. The 44-year-old former Dortmund striker was capped 9 times by Ghana and was even assistant coach to Kwasi Appiah between 2017 and 2019. He was favoured to be appointed the head coach when Appiah was fired but Akonnor surprisingly got the nod.
