The way we think of the nation is predatory – Constitutional Theorist
A Constitutional Theorist and Associate Professor at Ashesi Univesity, Dr Maame A.S. Mensa-Bonsu says Ghana’s economic woes partly stem from the perception of the country’s resources.
According to her, most individuals described the nation’s resources as a ‘cake’ and by the definition, it only implies that the resource is an edible substance and must be distributed across the board for all to benefit.
Speaking on Newsfile and JoyNews, she said “The way we think about our nation is predatory. We think of a national cake, it means we think going to eat it up. So, if we finish the cake, we will have nothing left. As long as we think of our country as something to be consumed we are going to get nothing more than what we have now.”
Her comments come on the back of the recently held flagbearership elections of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), where delegates who did not receive the alleged transport monies from then-candidates Dr Bawumia and Kennedy Agyapong fumed with anger because they cheated.
The Associate Professor explained that until there is a change in the mindset of the populace, Ghana will not develop since both politicians and citizens would want to come into office and vote people into power on the basis of “whose turn it was to enjoy the national cake”.
On the back of this, she stressed “I want you to think about the idea of a cake and what is it for. There is no such thing as growing a cake, we eat it and cut it up, and we disappear it completely. When you go to a function and they are cutting the cake, nobody at the function asks where the ingredients of the cake come from or how are we going to re-bake this cake.”
