U20 World Cup: Nigeria knock out host nation Argentina, Brazil trounce Tunisia

Nigeria qualified for the quarterfinals of the ongoing FIFA U-20 World Cup following their 2-0 win over Argentina on Wednesday night.

Argentina, who placed first in their group with maximum points, were blown out of the tournament by the Flying Eagles, who advanced as one of the best losers from the group stage.

The Flying Eagles calmed the loud home crowd a few minutes after the halftime break following a goalless first half. Umeh Emmanuel battled off a defender and provided a through pass to Ibrahim Muhammed on the Argentine goal line. The winger made no mistake, sending the ball past the onrushing Gomes Gerth and into the net to give Nigeria the lead.

Nigeria doubled their lead and advanced to the last eight of the competition when Victor Eletu wrestled off his marker before straining to assist substitute Rilwanu Sarki for a flying header into the net.

In another South America versus Africa contest, Brazil brushed aside Tunisia to also book a place in the quarterfinals.

Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos scored a brace while Marcos Leonardo and Matheus Martins also added their names to the scoresheet as the Brazilians earned a convincing 4-1 victory despite playing with a man down for the majority of the game.

Nigeria will face the winner of the game between Gambia and Uruguay in the next stage of the competition.
