You can only change behaviour if you know what exists already – Development Practitioner

Development Practitioner, Wilberforce Amoh has encouraged people who may want to correct the behavior of their spouses to consider previous happenings about the particular situation before attempting to do so.

Attributing his point to the current happenings in relationships and marriages, he indicated that some of the issues have happened in past generations.

This, he said, is the reason some mothers would advise their daughters to stay in their matrimonial homes and work out any challenges in their marriages.

Explaining his point on Prime Morning, Thursday, he said, “In behavior change, if you want to change behavior, you have to know what exists already. That’s why I mentioned the issue of what has been happening in age past and then what is happening now and how we can address it. So more or less, if you’re a woman and you’re suffering in your marriage, you even go to your own mother, and she’ll tell you to be humble and stay for the sake of the children.”

Addressing a viewer’s question on the issue of women who are forced to stay in abusive marriages, he averred that such things are done based on culture and tradition, of which women are mostly the victims.

He admonished that it would be better to quit the relationship, saying, “If you leave, you will live.” He said one may not survive if they decide to continue.

Although everyone is entitled to the decision to divorce, he also advised that it should be done cautiously as it may affect the children that may be involved.

Adding to the point, media personality, Christiana Sweety Aborchie noted that knowing the purpose of one’s life helps in making the decision of whether to stay or not.

“Life is not short or long. Life is finite; it has a beginning and an end. You have to decide what is it you want to do with that period that you’re alive. If you’re able to decide and also prioritise what it is that is valuable to you, you won’t want to remain in a relationship where you’re not appreciated,” she added.
