2022 FIFA World Cup: Senegal 0-2 Netherlands – Cody Gakpo & Davy Klaassen second-half goals sink Terenga Lions

African representatives, Senegal, opened their 2022 FIFA World Cup campaign with a loss to European giants the Netherlands on Monday afternoon.

With star-man Sadio Mane missing due to injury, Senegal coach Aliu Cisse settled on Salernitana forward Boulaye Dia to lead the attack.

However, it was the Dutch who created the most chances despite the fact that Senegal came mighty close.

Both teams struggled to break down each other’s defence and the tie was most likely heading for a draw.

However, with 6 minutes to go, PSV Eindhoven forward Gakpo leaped above everyone to head the ball past Edouard Mendy who was also beaten mid-air.

Deep into stoppage-time Davy Klaassen arrived on time to finish off a spilled ball from a Memphis Depay strike to seal the win for the Dutch.
