AshantiGold to lose major sponsors after match-fixing scandal rock miners

Betway Ghana Limited, headline sponsors of AshantiGold SC, could withdraw their sponsorship package for the Miners over an alleged match-fixing claim by an Inter Allies player.

Inter Allies defender Hashmin Musah, who scored two own-goals at the Len Clay Sports Stadium in the 7-0 clash on Saturday, has told Kumasi-based Kumasi FM that he deliberately scored the own-goals to prevent the game from ending 5-1 – a scoreline he claims he had heard of in the team’s hotel.

Betway Ghana Limited have taken wind of the scandalous development and are set to withdraw the sponsorship package which has been in existence for the past 5 seasons.

In 2016, AshantiGold signed the sponsorship package with the company which also doubles as headline sponsors for English Premier League side West Ham United. Both parties failed to disclosed the details of the deal but Ghana Sports Online understands the deal is worth an annual fee of $200,000.

Betway replaced Permafix as the club’s headline sponsor.

The Ghana FA has through a statement said they have launched an investigation into the match-fixing scandal as the football governing body deem it as an issue that bothers on the integrity of the Ghana Premier League.

FIFA’s integrity policy forbids players, coaches, technical team members and all officials of football clubs from engaging in match-fixing and betting.
