Black Stars: South Africa breaks 21-year-old jinx after beating Ghana in 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier

South Africa’s Bafana Bafana have broken a 21-year winless jinx against Ghana after the Black Stars succumbed to a 1-0 loss to the Rainbow country in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Maritzburg United center-forward Bongokuhle Hlongwane connected home scrappy finish 6 minutes from the end of the game.

Hugo Broos’ side went into the game at the FNB Stadium having failed to beat Ghana in 6 competitive attempts.

The Belgian had come under siege following the Bafana Bafana’s unimpressive 0-0 draw with Zimbabwe in Harare last Friday.

Out of the 6 competitive attempts, the Black Stars had won 4 times and drawn 2 – scoring 10 goals and conceding only 2 goals.

But, Bongokuhle Hlongwane’s goal on the 84th minute mark have now ended that impressive run.

It is worth emphasizing the South Africans have recorded victories against the Black Stars (2-1, 1-0) 2008 and 2010 respectively but on both occasions it was friendly games.
