Chelsea coach Christopher Ennin baffled by underwhelming performance of talisman Mezack Afriyie

Berekum Chelsea coach Christopher Ennin has been left bewildered by the performance of teen striker Mezack Afriyie in their 2-1 reverse at Kotoko in the Ghana Premier League on Wednesday.

Afriyie, 19, lasted the entire period of the game for the Blues at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium as they threw away a vital lead to succumb to a painful defeat to the league champions.

Former Liberty Professionals forward Emmanuel Sarpong fired the Berekum-based side into a 28th-minute lead. However, Ivorian Serge Zeze connected home a cut-back from Steven Mukwala to level the scoring for Seydou Zeybo’s men.

Ugandan forward Mukwala put his name on the score-sheet with a great header which sailed into Gregory Obeng Sekyere’s net for the match-winner.

During the post-match interview, Ennin admitted he was left surprised by the performance of his talisman who has scored 5 goals in 8 games.

“[For Mezack Afriyie’s performance] that is the question that I’m going to ask myself because I don’t know what was going on during his time with the national team. He just rejoined us and what I saw is not the Afriyie that I was expecting. So I think maybe he had personal issues but, I’m going to see to it and correct it,” he told Sitsofe Atsrim of StarTimes during the post-match interview.

The defeat leaves the 2010/11 league champions in 10th position with 12 points from 9 games.
