Ex-WAFA forward Prince Ampem strikes for Croatian side Rijeka in UEFA Conference League

Ghanaian forward Prince Obeng Ampem scored a vital goal to help Rijeka secure a crucial draw at Hibernian in the UEFA Europa Conference League on Thursday evening.

The 23-year-old former WAFA forward hit the back of the net in the 61st minute at the Easter Road Park in Edinburgh in a highly entertaining game.

Ampem head the Croatians ahead against the run of play but the Scottish Premiership side equalised 6 minutes later.

Meanwhile there were a couple of attempts at goal by the Ghanaian before he eventually scored in the second half.

On one such break away on the right Ampem was not far away from a spectacular opening with a rising shot from 25-yards that was just over Macey’s crossbar.

They were very quick to turn defence into attack and on 35 minutes Issah Abass found Ampem and his threaded pass in behind the Hibs defence released Vukcevic, who attempted to beat Macey at his near post, only to be denied by the stopper.

Then, against the run of play, HNK Rijeka scored. Vukcevic struck a deep, hanging back post cross that was headed in from close range by Ghanaian winger, Ampem. The goal scorer was substituted before play resumed.

The Sunyani-born forward joined Rijeka in a deal reported to be around €550,000 from HNK Sibenik who also compete in the Croatian league.

He was transferred from WAFA in 2017.
