EXCLUSIVE: Ghana set to fire Milovan Rajevac after 2021 AFCON disaster

Serbian coach Milovan Rajevac is expected to be fired as head coach of Ghana’s Black Stars following the abysmal performance of the four-time champions at the 2021 AFCON tournament in Cameroon.

Ghana Sports Online strong sources can reveal that the leadership of the West African nation’s football governing body has resolved to part ways with the 68-year-old.

Though Ghana FA President Kurt Okraku had jumped to the defence for the coach during a radio interview o Asempa FM, the decision has been taken to terminate the appointment of the coach.

In the wake of the appalling performance of the team which saw the first-round elimination, Hon. Mustapha Ussif, the Minister of Youth and Sports, summoned the hierarchy of the Ghana FA into a meeting to address the burning issues which have left many Ghanaian football fans worried.

During a post-match interview, Milovan Rajevac told a group of Ghanaian journalists in Garoua that winning the AFCON tournament wasn’t part of his contract targets and he would not resign from his position.

In a group featuring Morocco, Gabon, and debutantes Comoros, the Black Stars finished bottom of Group C with just a point from 3 games and a deficit goal aggregate of -2.

The display in Garoua culminated in Ghana’s worst-ever performance at the AFCON tournament which saw the Black Stars finish. Hitherto the performance in Cameroon, the one-time West African powerhouse had been eliminated four times at the group stage from the tournament but had never finished at the basement of the table.

Rajevac, former head coach of Qatar and Algeria, was appointed back in September 2021 following the sacking of Charles Akonnor by the Ghana FA.

Following the poor display of the Black Stars in the three games at the AFCON, Ghanaian fans are calling for the sacking of the 2010 FIFA World Cup coach.
