2021 AFCON: CAF appoints Algerian referee Lahlou Benbraham to handle Ghana vs Gabon clash

CAF has appointed Algerian referee Lahlou Benbraham to officiate the 2021 AFCON Group C clash between Ghana’s Black Stars and Gabon on Friday in Yaounde.

The 36-year-old acquired his FIFA batch in 2017 and has been officiating in the CAF Champions League for the past two seasons (2019/20 and 2020/21). He also officiated at the 2019 U23 AFCON tournament in Egypt.

He was in charge of Ghana’s two games at the U23 AFCON in Egypt in 2019. On November 8, 2019, he was a center referee for the Ghana vs Cameroon game which ended 1-1 at the Cairo International Sports Stadium.

Eleven days later, he was in charge of the Ghana vs Ivory Coast which ended 3-2 in favour of the Ivory Coast.

In 2021, he officiated 3 international games, all being FIFA international friendlies. Guinea vs Cameroon, Zambia vs Tanzania, and Niger vs DR Congo.

Ghana suffered a 1-0 loss to Morocco in the opening game of the tournament in Yaounde but, are fired up to go for victory against Gabon on Friday evening.
