Ghana’s Black Stars have clashed with the Super Eagles of Nigeria four (4) times in the month of March.
The four-time AFCON winners are yet to record a victory over their Nigerian counterparts in any of these previous meetings in the third month of the calendar year.
There are three draws and a loss for the Black Stars in these previous 4 meetings.
The first game between the two titans in March dates back to 1978 – 8th March 1978 – in Accra in the AFCON tournament. With 60,000 spectators in attendance at the Municipal Arena, the Willie Klutse equalized a Wole Odegbami 33rd minute strike with 14 minutes of normal time remaining. The game ended 1-1.
On March 5, 1984, also in the AFCON tournament, Ghana succumbed to a 2-1 defeat against the Super Eagles in front of 10,000 fans in Bouake in the Ivory Coast. All three goals were scored in the first half. Henry Nwosu opened the scoring for Nigeria in the 13th minute but Samuel Opoku Nti leveled things up for Ghana but, Ehilegbu nailed the coffin of the Black Stars 12 minutes later.
Again, there was a clash on March 9, 1994, in Lagos. A Ghana side coached by Edward Aggrey-Fynn held the host to a goalless draw at their own backyard.
The last meeting between the two in March happened on 10th March 2001 at the Accra Sports Stadium. Cecil Jones Attuquayefio snubbed all foreign-based players to use an entirely home-based squad to play against Nigeria in Accra.
Attuquayefio called up FIVE players from Kotoko, two each from Liberty Professionals and AshantiGold and one from Ebusua Dwarfs for the game. The rest were Hearts of Oak players. But, the entire starting XI for the game were Hearts of Oak players.
The Black Stars held a star-studded Nigeria side to a 0-0 draw at the Accra Sports Stadium on March 10, 2001.
