Ghana Premier League: Accra Lions 1-1 Elmina Sharks – Hearts of Oak loanee Michelle Sarpong strikes first goal of the season

Elmina Sharks opened their Ghana Premier League season campaign with a 1-1 drawn game against newly-promoted Accra Lions at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday evening.

Hearts of Oak loanee Michelle Sarpong went down in history as the first player to score in the 2021/22 Ghanaian season after striking the opener on the 63rd-minute mark.

But, 19-year-old forward Rauf Salifu grabbed a share of the spoils for the Lions with an 81st-minute effort.

Sharks trainer Nii Odartey Lamptey named former Asante Kotoko and TP Mazembe midfielder Daniel Nii Adjei in his starting XI while Dominic Eshun also started the game for the travellers.

Lions had no notable top-flight player in their squad for the game.

Nii Adjei drew a perfect save from Appiah Kubi late in the first half while Enock Agblenyo could have finished a brilliant chance when he was played through by Ebenezer Adukwaw.

The first goal of the game arrived at the 63rd-minute mark when goalkeeper Appiah Kubi failed to deal with an Agblenyo cross as Sarpong emerged to finish off the chance for the Sharks.

His teammate from Hearts Eshun joined him to wildly celebrate his goal as the two players returned to familiar grounds to chalk their early season glory.

While Sharks thought they had run away with the maximum points Salif Rauf profited from calamitous goalkeeping by Joseph Essam to grab the equaliser 8 minutes from time.

Ishmael Hammond was named the MVP for the match.
