Ghana Premier League – Match Report: Hearts of Oak 4-1 Eleven Wonders – Kofi Kordzi strikes double, Salifu Ibrahim with a brace of assists

Hearts of Oak registered their fifth victory of the Ghana Premier League season following their 4-1 thrashing of Eleven Wonders at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Striker Kofi Kordzi hit a double upon his return from illness as he increased his goal tally in the season to 7 goals in 10 games while midfield maestro Salim Ibrahim registered a brace of assists after setting up goals for the 27-year-old and Daniel Afriyie Barnieh.

However, the ultimate for every fan at the nation’s Wembley and indeed everybody watching from the television screens was the ferocious drive unleashed from the boots of Salim Adams and his ebullient jubilation with his teammates at the Osu stands corner area.

Wonders, trapped in the relegation zone, had won two of their last 5 games and were gradually building their morale to lift themselves from the drop zone. But, unfortunately, the Techiman-based Lemon Green and Whites had to deal with a wounded Hearts of Oak side who had unceremoniously suffered a 1-0 defeat at the Akoon Park against Medeama in a rescheduled fixture – their first loss in 3 games to the Mauve and Yellows.

It was 19-year-old Salim Adams who started the riotous turnout against the struggling side as he artfully controlled a Kofi Kordzi deflected effort about 26 yards out. He then pulled the trigger in the cruelest of manners as he blasted home a shot that goalkeeper Joseph Baah would dare not make any mistake of trying to stop. The former Ghana U20 midfielder has netted three times in competitive fixtures since his loan move from New Edubiase United and all 3 have come with such a magnetic attraction for greater goals.

Meanwhile, midfield fan belt Salifu Ibrahim has been rediscovering his good form in recent matches and he sent a reminder of how good he still is when he measured a pass to Kordzi which the center-forward finished off with a brilliant header. The cross from the former Wonders midfielder was incisive, well-calibrated, and inviting and Kordzi steered it past the goalkeeper.

On 53 minutes, Afriyie Barnieh was felled inside the box after he broke free on the right following a swift counter-attacking play. Kordzi stepped up, aimed at the right bottom corner with a strong low volley and he picked his spot despite goalkeeper Baah stretching to his elastic limits in an attempt to stop the kick.

An articulated pass from Salifu just after the hour mark put Afriyie Barnieh through the youngster slotted the ball past the visitors’ keeper for the 4th.

Mohammed Tetteh Nortey on his return to the Accra Sports Stadium took advantage of a penalty kick which was committed by Caleb Amankwaah 8 minutes from time. The 2007 Ghana U17 FIFA World Cup defender blasted the ball home for the consolation goal to lessen the pain for his side.
